This is the time of year stores have potted flowers at ridiculously low prices like this pot of miniature daffodils Dave bought me this week, lightly fragrant and a beautiful spot of color.
This little pot has six or seven blooms, all with the golden yellow trumpets and pure yellow perianth, and small leaves.
We will enjoy this while it blooms, probably a week or more, but it doesn’t make sense to keep these over the summer to repot next winter for repeat flowering. Daffodils require cold to blossom and careful storage for the bulbs until fall.
Instead I will plant these outside. This small grouping has grown from a similar pot Dave got me a couple years ago. These are Thalia daffodils. My new pot doesn’t have a variety name but they are likely the same type. Thalia are tiny and hardy.
The dandelions give you a perspective for size. These are only about 6 inches tall, loaded with flowers. I’ve then tucked into a narrow section where the garden comes to a point between a couple of pathways.
It’s important to find something for those small points to punctuate the garden shape and keep out weeds. These tiny daffodils are perfect!
The next time you see a pot languishing in your store, don’t hesitate. Buy it. They smell so good and look beautiful this year indoors, and next year make a spot in your garden. These tiny flowers are easy to tuck into those awkward spots we all have!
