What does your cat think when he stares intently at that door that inexplicably is closed?
I’m Trapped
This common response, the intense hatred of being stuck where they don’t want to be, is known as the Trapped Response. Your cat shows her feelings with her wild eyes, frightened meows, and brief (nanosecond) display of gratitude when you open the door.
I Wonder What’s On the Other Side
No matter that he just came out of the bathroom, the door now closed indicates there may be something different on the other side. I wonder what that is?
Once the door opens it’s obvious that the other side is just as boring and it’s time to reverse the wonderment.
It’s Time to Bang on the Door and Look Desperate
Lovely noise isn’t it? That thudding bang when your cat paws or butts against a close door. Only a terrible cruel tyrant would put a sock in the door jamb to muffle the noise.
Where is My Servant NOW?
Yes, where are you and why aren’t you standing by to do doorman duty? You are bad.
Cleo went in and out the sliding door all summer long but once the slider froze she went OUT the back door in the winter and that was how she intended to come IN. Every single time she sat outside on the patio waiting for Dave to go out in the snow and bring her back in. She was not impressed.
I Wanted In and Now I Want Out
What’s so hard to understand here? Recognize this by her haughty attitude when you open the door. It’s not quite the same as the Trapped! look, more condescending than grateful.
Pathos! I’m Stuck Indoors!
There is no one more pathetic than Billy Bob looking out on a nice day. Or even a not so nice day.
George can’t get quite the same pathos.
There’s a Whole Big World On the Other Side
All the cool cats are on the other side!
And Sometimes the Door Opens to a Cozy Cave Just Right for a Nap
George likes to sleep on my fuzzy shawl…
And on my books….
And on the pile of snowboots… It’s nice and dark in here.
And when he wakes up it’s time to bang on the door once again.
