We live in the country. Oh, not a wild, remote, thickly forested wilderness, more a rural road with a few houses on it, one farmer, a golf course and some woods. We do have a well for water and a septic tank. The one problem with wells is that pumps do not run without electricity. A power outage means a water outage.
I can live without a shower for a day or two, heck maybe even a few days if there is water to wash up in, brush my teeth, make coffee. But another thing we need water for is for flushing. I’m not too keen on dumping bottled water down the drain.
Enter the water jugs! These are milk jugs rinsed out and filled from the hose. I’ll keep three of them down in the basement just in case.
The fourth water jug is to water the indoor plants. Last winter Dave noticed our indoor plants looked sad, despite care and sunshine. He decided that maybe we were killing them slowly with the salt from the water softener so he saved water from the outside faucets over the winter. Luckily the plant room is big enough to hold several jugs although it was a bit of an eyesore.
Incidentally the plants did much better when we stopped using the tap water from inside and switched to the non softened water from the outside faucets. If you have a water softener try using water from your outside spigots and see whether your plants do better.
