It’s been cold here in Michigan and the water temperature in our pool slipped below 60 yesterday. That’s cold!
It was sunny yesterday and we had the solar cover on. Although it was in the 50s Sunday night, our Monday daytime got to the low 70s and it was a pretty day. The top couple inches of the pool warmed up and I just had to go for a swim.
I asked Dave to leave the skimmer off to keep from mixing the layers. When I got in the pool the top was nice and warm; the middle was cool and the bottom was good and cold. Luckily swimming keeps you mostly on the top!
Each time I moved my hand to start a stroke my shoulder was warm, then my hand and lower arm got cool – cooler – oops cold – then back to warm, or warmish. I did my 30 laps (all of 10 yards each), splashed around a bit and got out!
Swimming like that with a top layer of nice and a bottom layer of ice reminded me of a vacation we took when the kids were little to Lake Superior Provincial Park in Ontario. This park is on the southern end of Lake Superior and has some lovely protected bays where the water is more or less swimming temperature. This beach is one of the nice ones; the water is rough in this picture but it was calm when we were there.
When you float around it’s like floating on a layer of warm while every bit of your body that dangles below the surface drifts through ice cubes. Kind of fun on a hot day. I learned to bring the blow up ring into the water then sit down as soon as the water was knee deep. That kept my feet from freezing solid before I could enjoy the beautiful water and gentle breeze in the sun.
I know when we were kids we swam in the Great Lakes every chance we got and I don’t remember it being cold although it must have been. We went to Lake Superior and spent days in the water. There must be something about getting older that makes you either have more sense or more feeling because now I know cold from warm. I still might go for a swim but at least I know it’s cold!
