Last time I walked out back the milkweed seed pods were bursting open, sending white downy fluffs everywhere.
The milkweed flowers are a light dusky rose lavender color and they bloom in big flower heads. The plants are about 3 feet tall and will grow even where it’s pretty dry. Our field doesn’t get watered but we were lucky this summer and got rain almost every week.
I hardly noticed the milkweed plants until they started to form big curved seed pods. Then when the pods started to open and all the white puffs came out the milkweed patches glowed in the sunshine.
Each seed is attached to a single puff that the wind takes where it wills. I hope most of the seeds found a place to grow!
I love how the seeds look like they are spilling out of the pod.
Some people turn the seed pods into crafts. They are neat shapes and they dry well.
As I walked by the last big patch of flowers I realized the scene looks a lot like a picture we have in the living room. Here’s the flower patch with the milkweed ready to open up and blow away.
And here’s the picture. It’s a print and I don’t know the artist. Dave really likes it.
I like how the artist captured the feeling that although the scene is remote, the milkweeds and grasses keep it from being desolate. It looks like the owners don’t use the old shed but it has too many memories to tear down.
Do you have any pictures in your home that look like your back yard?
