Lattice topped pies look so fancy that we think they are hard to make. In fact they are easy! Here’s Dave’s method to make a pie with a lattice top crust.
Make the pie as usual and be sure the bottom crust edges extend over the top of the pie plate.
1 Moisten the top of the bottom crust.
Roll out the pie dough for the top crust into a circle about 3 inches larger than your pie plate.
Cut into strips about 3/4 inch wide.
Lay strips horizontally on top the filling and leave about an inch overlapping the rim. Here Dave is laying the horizontal rows.
Pull back every other strip on right edge. Lay a vertical strip cross-wise and fold the horizontal strips back over.
Now switch and work from right to left. Lift alternating horizontal strips up, lay a vertical, fold back.
Go to the next strip on the left and repeat.
When the pie top is full it should look like a criss cross.
See how the strips hang over the top of the rim. Dave will seal and remove these next.
Take a fork and push down on the pie crust on top of the rim.
Cut the excess crust off the edge of the pie plate.
If you like, moisten the top of the pie with milk and sprinkle sugar on top.
Bake.
Enjoy!
