This year spring has come in like waves on the beach, in and out, in and out. Days in the 70-80s followed by days in the 40-50s, sun followed by rain. We always have variable spring weather, but it’s not common to have 80 degree days in early May or 40 degree days in late May. My flowers have managed to cope with the weather, in fact they are blooming a bit earlier than some years.
Right now our salvia, iris, dianthus and sweet williams are blooming with peonies, daylilies and delphiniums lined up ready to go in a few days.
Dianthus lines the borders all along our perennial beds. These same plants wintered over in our planters back in 2012 and bloom so beautifully in pink, crimson, deep red, red and white and red and pink blends. Here they are peeking out under peonies.
Last year I had a few extra dianthus plants from the prior summer’s planters and put them by the fence. They were a bit wimpy last summer but are blooming now.
I love Sweet Williams and planted seeds in late 2012. They bloomed beautifully in 2013 and every year since get bigger with more colors and volunteers in the paths and vacant spots of dirt. I sprinkled some seed by the fence a couple years ago. Look how they are thriving!
Sweet Williams are dianthus varieties too and have the same intricate markings and luscious red to purple to pink colors.
We have a light blue iris, which we bought years ago, a yellow with white that we dug up from the ditch and a lavender with beige and deep burgundy purple with dark purple-brown that came from my Mom’s house. I left the iris behind when we moved here but Dave dug them up for me. You can read about last year’s iris here.
The yellow are quite pretty but don’t have many flowers and last only a few days. I’m glad to have a couple plants. The two from my Mom get garden room because they were hers but we have quite a few extra that can go if I need the space for prettier flowers or different iris.
They do look good with the deep purple blue salvia, yellow iris and medium purple sweet rockets.
The salvia is very pretty. One was supposed to be a wine-purple but both turned out to be the deep blue purple and have spread a bit. We have 4 or 5 plants now.
Last night the late evening sun made the yellow iris glow. I couldn’t resist getting a picture from the back deck.
Most of these photos are the left garden as it has the salvia and more blooming now. We have a very odd plant in the right hand side, what is supposed to be a perennial baby’s breath. At least it was a baby’s breath last year!
This year it looks like a failed English daisy. I wonder whether it will shape up and start blooming like a baby’s breath or will end up in the compost pile!
