Friday, May 8. Hot and muggy. Planted the round circle section with pansies, marigolds and snapdragons. Bought perennials at the MSU master gardener sale. Planted a couple planters and poppy seeds in front day lily bed. Daffodils nearly done. Peonies growing and setting buds. No sign of hibiscus or eupatorium.
Saturday, May 9. Hot and muggy. Rained quite a bit. Planted more planters.
Sunday, May 10. Mother’s Day. Hot and muggy, rained some more. Finished the planters. This year I used bubble wrap in the bottoms vs. rocks or filling with dirt all the way. Planters have dianthus, including some that came back from last summer, small snaps, vinca for mid size, rocket snaps and verbena for big, allysum and lobelia for trailing. I made the mistake of buying seeds for allysum, had to get some plants too as otherwise we’ll wait a month for flowers.
Very large planter by fountain has marigolds, snaps and planted nasturtium seeds.
Monday, May 11. Still pretty warm. Weeded seed bed and planted my zinnias, bachelor buttons, lavatera and cosmos. Made a mistake and planted everything too close. All seeds from Crossmans this year.
Tuesday, May 12. Cold and windy. Low 50s, just a bit of rain. They started to put the sprinklers in out back. I didn’t do any gardening. Had Monsignor Martin over for dinner.
First hibiscus shoots are up. There is something around the eupatorium but I can’t tell whether it’s the flower.
Wednesday, May 13. Nice, high 50s, low 60s and sunny. Weeded southernmost bed and put down Rose and Floral on all the peonies and other flowers and put bunny deterrent on the peonies.
First allysum seedlings in the planters.
Thursday, May 14. Very nice, low to mid 60s, sunny. Weeded center perennial bed and put down Rose and Floral and bunny go-away. Finished the 2nd 5 pound bag of Rose and Floral.
First shoots of Amsonia are up, they look like little ferns. The butterfly weed are all doing well. Not sure about the asters, looks like at least one didn’t make it through the winter. Delphinium did not survive.
It’s supposed to be hot tomorrow.
