The garden in our old house was half shady and some of my daylilies did not do well. They survived and bloomed but never seemed to thrive. We moved to Kalamazoo in southwestern Michigan after that. Our back yard was almost all sun all the time. We moved some of our plants with us, including daylilies, even the ones that I was less than enthusiastic about.
Today let’s celebrate a few of our thriving, happy, glorious colored daylilies. This post was written and photographs two summers after we moved in and replanted the daylilies.
I didn’t care much for this first red daylily in our old house. It’s dark, almost maroon in the shade, but a nice dark red in sunny locations. You can see it is pretty tall with medium sized blooms. Somehow we ended up with several pieces of this one.
This next bright yellow is Mary Todd, a favorite that blooms profusely for many weeks in early summer. I don’t know the name of the one behind it, it is very pretty, robust with great colors of peach, gold and apricot. We started with one plant and now have several, all from divisions. It is that good. I look forward to it every year. (Since we do not have the plant tag any more or know its true name, I’ve called it “Summer Hosanna” because it is similar to but earlier than the Hosanna daylily bed by Brother Charles.)
A better view of Summer Hosannah.
We have many more daylilies, these are the earlier blooming varieties we are enjoying now.
Note: I wrote this post in 2013, eleven years ago, but forgot to post it. We cannot grow daylilies here, which is a shame because they are gorgeous! Seeing these beautiful flowers I simply had to post it today.
