My nephew married his long-time sweetheart this weekend. Zach met Anna at a church-sponsored building trip in Appalachia when they were in high school. Anna graduated this spring and they married. It was a happy wedding, full of joyful people. The bride and groom smiled all through the Mass, all through the reception and their families could not help but join. Their happiness was infectious.
Dave and I drove up Friday afternoon since my brother generously extended the rehearsal dinner to family. It was delightful to see people we’ve not seen for several years, especially to see them at a happy event. Two other nephews were there, both of whom I saw last at funerals. Weddings are so much better times to see people!
My older sister and her husband visited us for a couple days prior. She and I have become closer which is great. I always wanted a sister who was my friend and now Jan fits the bill. I hope I fill the same niche for her. Janet’s oldest son and his family came too. His kids have grown up in the 5 or 6 years since we last saw them and his daughter is quite the young lady now, so pretty. His wife is a sweetie that was fun to visit with after the wedding Mass.
Jan mentioned the trend is now for people to skip the ceremony and join the celebration. She felt it was fitting, that the celebration is the more important. I disagree. The ceremony, even if not religious, is the key since the marriage is forever while the party is for the evening. Of course I’m biased. Dave and I married 40 years ago and our faith and our marriage are bonds that hold.
I wish for Zach and Anna to be happy and blessed all the days of their lives.
